It is clear that we will not be able to deliver JOMBA! the same manner as previous years. COVID-19 has shifted the arts world very significantly. With the initial curtailing of gatherings of more than 100 people to a full lock down … and while we all have every hope and wish that life as we remember it will return to ‘normal’ after July, there are clear indictors that this might not be possible to the extent of complete free movement without any social distancing and concern around gatherings of people. Arts and culture will remain one of the hardest hit sectors both now and will continue to be so in whatever is the post COVID-19 phase. We are thus working and planning in an environment of fragile uncertainty but in a space — via the Centre for Creative Arts at UKZN — that I believe could still offer (importantly) much needed income generations for local artists and still offer audiences (embodied or virtual) space to engage serious and important new art and dance making via a re-visioned digital JOMBA! 2020. The ideas is to make JOMBA! a benchmark of what a dance festival could possibly be/become at this zeitgeist in our history. JOMBA! 2020 will be a digital platform and as such we are accepting digital submissions for the JOMBA! Fringe 2020.

Professional, experimental and up-coming choreographers, dancers and dance companies are invited to apply for participation on the JOMBA! Digital Fringe platform.

Please note that this application form does not confirm inclusion of your digital offering, it will be placed (alongside all other applications) before the JOMBA! selection committee. If you are successful in your application you will be notified via e-mail please ensure all details are correctly filled in when you submit you digital Fringe form that goes alongside the film (ensure too that the e-mail address you supply is valid, and one which you regularly check). Please note that the committee’s decisions are final: no late applications will be accepted, and no discussion will be entered into regarding these matters.

We will accept 8-to-10 digital works onto this year’s JOMBA! Fringe, and these will be streamed as part of the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience on a date to be confirmed.

We are accepting works of no longer than 6-minutes onto the platform.

As we are a contemporary dance festival, works that are located within the broad spectrum of contemporary dance will be considered, and preference will be given to South African and African submissions.

For the JOMBA! Digital Fringe, we are accepting works that are specifically conceived, and created for film and for a digital platfom, and that develop interesting dynamics between dance and screen/digital/film disciplines.

A panel of experts (local and international) will adjudicate the works presented as part of the JOMBA! Digital Fringe, and our “Pick-of-the-Fringe” works will be announced publicly.

The work selected as “Pick-of-the-Fringe” will receive a R1500,00 award.

This year there are also a two further cash awards;

- the “Runner-up to the Pick-of-the-Fringe” who will receive R1000,00

- and a third place award for which the applicant will receive R500,00 (payments will be made after JOMBA! 2020).
