JOMBA! 2021 “OPEN HORIZONS” CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
As we move into 2021, and into our 2nd digital iteration of JOMBA!, we are happy to announce that the platform that used to be known as the JOMBA! FRINGE is undergoing a makeover and will now be called “JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS”. It remains an open access platform for any and all contemporary dance makers to apply and show case their work at the festival. Application for consideration is done via this application form and selection is mediated by a panel of dance experts from across Africa. For 2021, this platform remains open for DIGITAL DANCE/SCREEN DANCE submissions only.

Professional, experimental and up-coming choreographers, dancers and dance companies are invited to apply for participation on either (or both) of the JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS platforms.
The platform is split into:
- JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS (LONG FORM)
and
- JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS (SHORT FORM)
The JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS (LONG FORM) platform welcomes digital dance works between 5–8 min in length. Selected works will be streamed on the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience’s YouTube channel.
The JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS (SHORT FORM) platform welcomes digital dance works between 1–3 min in length. Selected works will be streamed on the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience’s YouTube Channel and various connected social media platforms.
- The works selected for this platform will be offered in lo-res on our platforms, to engage wider accessibility, through the provision of lo-res files, that are short in length and can be shared across social media platforms including, but not limited to FaceBook, Instagram and Whatsapp — so please do consider this before sending in your application.
Please note that this application form does not confirm inclusion of your digital offering, it will be placed (alongside all other applications) before the JOMBA! selection committee. If you are successful in your application you will be notified via e-mail please ensure all details are correctly filled in when you submit your digital APPLICATION form that goes alongside your digital (video) submission (ensure too that the e-mail address you supply is valid, and one which you regularly check). Please note that the committee’s decisions are final: no late applications will be accepted, and no discussion will be entered into regarding these matters.
We will be accepting 6-to-8 digital works onto this year’s JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS (LONG FORM) platform, and these will be streamed as part of the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience on a date to be confirmed.
We will accept 8-to-10 digital works onto this year’s JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS (SHORT FORM) platform, and these will be streamed as part of the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience on various dates to be confirmed.
ABOUT:
JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS (LONG FORM) platform
We are accepting digital/screen dance works of between 5–8min onto this platform.
As we are a contemporary dance festival, works that are located within the broad spectrum of contemporary dance will be considered, and preference will be given to South African and African submissions.
For the JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS (LONG FORM) platform, we are accepting works that are specifically conceived, and created for film and for a digital platform, and that develop interesting dynamics between dance and screen/digital/film disciplines.
A panel of experts (local and international) will adjudicate the works presented as part of the JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS (LONG FORM) platform, and our “Pick of the OPEN HORIZONS (LONG FORM) platform”works will be announced publicly.
The x3 works selected as “Pick of the OPEN HORIZONS (LONG FORM) platform” will receive:
● 1st prize: R3 500.00
● 2nd prize: R2 500.00
● 3rd prize: R1 500.00
(payments will be made after JOMBA! 2021).

We are accepting works of between 1–3 min onto the platform.
As we are a contemporary dance festival, works that are located within the broad spectrum of contemporary dance will be considered, and preference will be given to South African and African submissions.
For the JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS (SHORT FORM) platform, we are accepting works that are specifically conceived, and created for film and for a digital platform, and that are created for engagement across a variety of social media platforms including WhatsApp (we will render selected works into lo-res formats for these distribution models).
A panel of experts (local and international) will adjudicate the works presented as part of the JOMBA! OPEN HORIZONS (SHORT FORM) platform and our “Pick of the OPEN HORIZONS (SHORT FORM) platform”works will be announced publicly.
The work selected as “Pick of the OPEN HORIZONS (SHORT FORM) platform” will receive:
● 1st prize: R2 000.00
● 2nd prize: R1 500.00
● 3rd prize: R1 000.00
